The 1850 House is probably the first apartment building ever in North America, and this museum is actually a period-authentic apartment house, fully furnished. These apartments, though, are more Upper East Side than they are your normal, run-of-the-mill high-density housing. Each apartment is 4 stories, has a luscious and spacious courtyard, a separate kitchen, and servant quarters (which, in the 1850s housed slaves rather than paid servants). The bedrooms are perhaps the most amazing, with both half- and full-teaster beds (these are giant two- and four-poster beds with built-in wooden canopies). Not only is this a beautiful piece of period architecture, but it's right on Jackson square, with a view of St. Louis Cathedral, the Presbytere, and the Cabildo, with Cafe du Monde right across the street.
